Eton boost turbine charger. http://feedly.com/k/GBChks

Many of us Tech Geeks find it difficult to compromise on the number of energy hungry gadgets we can bring with us when we leave the confines of our “On Grid” to satisfy our desire to explore the trails less traveled, “Off Grid” style. Who doesn’t want the convenience of a smartphone that works better as a GPS than most GPS specific devices on the market today? Most of today’s high tech portable devices are big on technology and short on battery life. If your idea of an outdoor adventure doesn’t always include the use of a vehicle equipped with the ever more popular 12V outlet, Eton may have the product for you. Brendan Leonard of Adventure Journal took Eton’s hand crank equipped BoostTurbine 2000 on an 11 day trek to test the unit’s viability as a charging source for your favorite USB equipped mobile electronic devices.

It turns out the 7-once, 11 cubic inch device requires roughly 500 rotations of the crank to increase an iPhone’s battery charge by 1%! Click here Adventure Journal to read more about Brendon’s experiences with the BoostTurbine

Offroad versions of GM SUV s http://feedly.com/k/GBCl3Fy

General Motors is considering offering offroad capable versions of the latest models of their large SUVs. According to Autonews.com GM is going to offer a more off road capable option for all of their body on frame SUVs. According to Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for GM Trucks, the Z71 package GM has been offering on the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, has not been as popular as was hoped. Could this mean the tables are finally turning and American automotive manufacturers are again recognizing us in the more “Utility” market segment? Let’s cross our fingers, but not yet hold our breath. Read more about this story here: Autonews.com

Modular rack for a pickup – http://feedly.com/k/GBCwMe

The variety of accessories available to pickup truck owners, to better utilize open bed space, has been expanding rapidly over the past several years. With most trucks now sporting a shorter bed and larger cab, the four post rack systems to haul longer loads such as canoes, kayaks, surf boards, and the occasional extension ladder have become a common accessory in the pickup truck community. Backbone of Kent, Washington has added a new product to their lineup of four post rack systems, the V Back.

Does anyone know why there are rocks stacked on the beach?

I spent some time exploring along Lake Champlain today in Vermont.  The covered bridges are beautiful.  The fall colors are just part their peak.  But I’m fascinated by the abundance of these stacked rocks.  Anyone know of there is any significance or is it just an indication that the address is frequented by “stoners?”….. Get it?!  Stoners?!?!

Fiat Chrysler is at it again! According to Car and Driver, Fiat Chrysler, Jeep’s parent company, is in testing stages of development of a compact crossover vehicle purported to carry the Jeepster moniker. http://feedly.com/k/1f5UCpc

For those who may not be familiar with Jeep history, the Jeepster was an all terrain passenger vehicle originally produced by the Willys Overland Company from 1948 to 1950.  A crossover vehicle in its own right, the Jeepster was intended to bridge the gap between the utilitarian all terrain vehicle niche segment of post WWII America automotive market, and the more popular passenger car market.

Image from Wikipedia

So it stands to reason the Italian American Automobile Manufacturer would resurrect the Jeepster name to badge a vehicle that could help redefine the image of the Jeep brand.  The new Jeepster is being developed in Italy and is based on the Fiat 500 platform. It will come standard as a front wheel drive vehicle, with an all wheel drive option available.

The US version will be powered by a 1.4 liter inline four cyclinder gasoline engine. The European version will also be available with an optional 1.3 liter turbo diesel. The Jeepster is scheduled to hit the market in late 2014 as a 2015 model. Could this be a sign of the future direction of the Jeep Brand?

2014 Cherokee

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/09/19/2014-jeep-cherokee-review-first-drive/

Photo from Autoblog

As the pre-release reviews of the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee continue to show up in your favorite off-road magazine and/or websites, we are beginning to get a clearer picture (to the chagrin of many die-hard Cherokee fans) of what the capabilities of the vehicle, carrying resurrected Cherokee nameplate, will be.

Gone is the solid front axle found under the XJ bodied Cherokee. The new era of the Cherokee bids farewell to the simple, utilitarian features of the earlier Cherokee’s that we all know and love.

wpid-IMG_0323.JPG

In its place is a very refined vehicle that seems to impress many of those who have driven it so far. According to the folks over at AutoBlog.com, the new Cherokee, at a minimum, will provide stiff competition for the other vehicles in its class. Still, in the eyes of the dedicated XJ owner, the new Cherokee will most likely never live up to the reputation of its predecessors.

Ford SVT Raptor

Ford appears to have scored a home run with its F150 SVT Raptor. Since its introduction, the Raptor has beat the odds with record sales in an era where high fuel prices and a weak economy have stymied demand for models with less than stellar mpg ratings. According to AutoBlog.com, the SVT Raptor has seen record sales in eight of the past ten months.   With a starting price of  $44,000 the Raptor may be proof that Americans are still willing to pay the premium for a vehicle design where performance and capability supersedes fuel efficiency and practicality.

Utah, Will Not Drive 55

The state of Utah has moved to raise the speed on some rural stretches of its roadways to 80mph. After preforming multi-year studies, The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) determined the higher speed limits would be safer by allowing more vehicles on the highway to travel at the same speed.

Episode 48 – Team Lerner Reina

This week on the podcast we talk with Amy Lerner from Team Learner Reina about her upcoming trip to Australia to compete in the Australasia Safari.  Amy and her sister have previously competed in the Rally Achia de Gazelles in Morocco and have now moved on to this new challenge.  Its exciting to talk with ladies involved in offroading and to see how they are shaping the future of the sport and activity.
330539_319378948114262_1234239273_o
Amy will be driving a Jeep JKU Wrangler that has been modified by AEV.  There’s a long list of modifications and you’ll have to listen to the show to find out what all AEV has been done.  The modifications continue in Australia as I type this so that their rig meets the race safety specifications.
The Australiasia Safari takes competitors over a wide range of terrain as is stretches across the western coastal area of Australia and the outback.  It is Australia’s most grueling challenge and is in a similar format as that found in the Dakar Rally.  As a matter of fact, the Safari could get Amy and her sister pre-qualified for the Dakar Rally and result in their entry fees and shipping costs being covered!  For more info on Team Lerner Reina be sure to like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter and check out their website.
NEWS
In the news we talk about Land Rover testing an all-electric Defender.  An all-electric vehicle might not be what you want when you’re way out in the middle of nowhere but there are some cool features that would be nice to have.  A very nice range extending feature is the ability to generate 80% of the battery power while braking down hills.  Do you think that all-electric vehicles will proliferate over the backcountry within the next 15 years?  Check out the full article at Autoblog.com
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner has received a huge refresh for the model year but in my opinion, its got an ugly front end.  I’m not talking Jeep Cherokee ugly; instead it has exaggerated features that don’t look like they are doing anything to increase aerodynamics which makes it ugly for the sake of ugly.  While the Toyota 4Runner isn’t the most aggressive offroad vehicle, it certainly has more civility.  Pricing starts at $32,820 but you’ll want the Trail model ($35,725 base) which comes with multi-terrain response system, crawl control and hill start assist.  You could even step up to the Trail Premium for $38,645 and get a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System which basically disconnects the sway bars automatically.  Check out the full article at Autoblog.com.
When I was a kid I thought that the old Meyers Manx was the coolest vehicles ever made.  The open top beach buggy design has become iconic but for the most part, mostly forgotten.  VW has applied for a patent for a vehicle had has a strong resemblance to the older buggy.  That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to by one, but VW is starting to look at the market viability.  Are you interested in a VW Up Buggy?  Check out the full article at Autoblog.com.
Storage options in a Jeep Wrangler are extremely limited.  Dirt Bagz looks to solve that problem with their Wheel Well Saddle Bags.  They are large enough to store some goodies but my concern would be the ability to lock the storage down to prevent theft.  The full article is available at GrabAWrench.com.
We at The 4×4 Podcast love Goal Zero products.  If money were no object I would totally spring for the Yeti but it might be a bit large for my offroading setup.  It would be great in a trailer though!  Just think about all the possibilities around camp with that much power on tap.  It makes for a great backup power system for the house.  Pair it up with the right solar panels and you’re in business!

Outdoor Edible

Our recipie for the week is one of my Dutch oven favorites; Apple Crisp!
Ingredients:
· 6 apples sliced and chopped
· 3 tbsp cinnamon
· 1 tbsp nutmeg
· 3 cups quick oats
· 1 cup flour
· 2 cups brown sugar
· 1 tsp baking powder
· 1 tsp salt
· 1 cup butter
· Coarse sugar
· Caramel sauce

Directions:
Mix apples, cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl. Mix oats, flour, brown sugar baking powder, salt and butter to make the crust. Press ½ of the crust into the bottom of the Dutch oven and then spread the apples across the crust. Drizzle a light coat of caramel on the apples. Spread the remaining crust on top of the apples.

Bake for about 45 minutes at 350 degrees (try using 6 coals on the bottom and 15-18 coals on top). Once crust is crispy, remove from heat, drizzle more caramel sauce on top (I really like caramel!) and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Feeds 8-10.

Use this tool to check the temp on your recipe.

Offroad APPtitude app of the week is the GoPro app for iOS and Android. Since the GoPro was introduced, it has improved by leaps and bounds. The Hero 3 is the current generation and it comes in three different flavors; white, silver and black. The white edition is the lowest of the family and the black is the big daddy. One of the features that makes the Hero3 special, regardless of edition is that WiFi is built-in. WiFi allows you to use the remote and the GoPro apps to remotely control the camera.

Episode 47 – National Nissan Xterra Meet

In episode 47 of the podcast, we feature an interview with David Boyd and we talk about the National Xterra Meet or NXM.  The Nissan Xterra is an often overlooked offroading platform but maybe it shouldn’t be overlooked.  The Nissan Xterra has been through a few revisions since its introduction in 2000 but it remains a viable choice for offroading since it is a body-on-frame vehicle based on the  now defunct, Nissan Frontier.  The National Xterra Meet takes place at Windrock Offroad Park in Oliver Lane, TN.  NXM is a four day event at an amazing offroading location.  Windrock actually is the “secret” test location for Xtreme 4×4 and Trucks on the Spike cable TV station.  Windrock is 72,000 acres of playground that includes 300 miles of trails and the trail network is still growing. The terrain at Windrock will provide a challenge for everyone from regardless if you’re driving a bone stock Xterra or a completely stock vehicle that only shares the Xterra running gear.

1008830_10151543786101596_603621815_o

The National Xterra Meet is sure to be a hit because it also has the support from many popular offroad parts manufactures, shops and even Nissan!  Nissan’s US headquarters is located in Nashville and they have production lines just down the road from Windrock which makes the location and this event a hotbed of Nissan offroading.  If you can make it to the third annual National Xterra Meet which will be held on September 19-22, 2013, I highly recommend that you attend.  You just might win a raffle or prize from Nisstech LiftsWhite Knuckle Offroad ProductsRaingler NetsOffroad Performance Productsor 4Wheel Parts.  If you already have an Xterra or if you’re looking at buying one and you want to learn more about the vehicle, then you should check out the Xterra specific forum Xterra Nation.

In the news segment we talk about an article talking about Rigid Industries – LED Lighting being identified as the fastest growing LED manufactures in the US.  Rigid Industries was ranked #151 in Inc Magazine’s 500/5000 Fastest Growing Companies with a tremendous growth rate of 2,528% from 2009 to 2012.  Rigid Industries is widely used in desert race vehicles around the world and they are tried and proven as extremely durable and provide an amazing amount of light.  One of the biggest benefits of LED lights is that they drawn a very low voltage and they produce so much light!  They are also vibration, dust and water resistant which makes them the perfect choice of light to use in an offroad race vehicle.  I don’t have any Rigid Industries lights on my vehicle at this time, but only because I haven’t had the cash flow for that upgrade yet.  Another great thing about the company is the support that they provide to race teams and the entire offroading community.  The race suit I wore during my Hero Offroad sponsored experience at the Baja 1000 with Team Homemade Motorsports was provided by Damon Flippo who works for Rigid Industries.  Great people, making great equipment for offroading is all I need to know that Rigid Industries is a great company to recommend.  Article from Pirate 4×4.

Rigid Industries on Team Homemade Motorsports #701 at the Baja 1000 2012

Rigid Industries on Team Homemade Motorsports #701 at the Baja 1000 2012

Ford has confirmed that it will be sending a truck to the Dakar Rally for 2014!  Ford’s global edition Ranger has been built in South Africa, will be piloted by a South American and a South African and the logistics will be handled by a German company.  I’m looking forward to seeing how the 2014  rally is shaping up!

I love Forward Control Jeeps.  But I also really like quirky non-standard vehicles.  Forward Control Jeeps are fairly rare and very unique looking.  The crew cab FC Jeep is an even more rare beast with production numbers somewhere between 300 and 700.  This particular model was listed on eBay with a price of only $7500 but the reserve hasn’t been met.  Like we’ve mentioned on previous shows, if you’re looking for a cool restoration project this could be a fun one; but it will be a labor of love that you might want to hold on to for a while once it’s finished.  Article from Grab A Wrench.

This year has been one of the worst years on record for wildfires.  These fires have pretty much engulfed the western United States.  Even now there are fires encroaching on dream homes in the mountains and threatening the iconic giant sequoias in Yosemite.  There are some areas in the US that are designated as “let it burn” areas but that is really hard to understand for many people.  Forest fires are frequently started due to nothing that humans have done.  The problem many times with these fires is that homes have been built in areas that are frequently threatened by fires.  The weather conditions lately have made dense try forests just ripe for these wildfire disasters.  There lots of ways that you can prevent a fire starting from your own actions.  Here’s a few tips:

  • Ensure your camp fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area
  • Avoid driving where tall grass could catch fire from contact with your exhaust system
  • Plan ahead and observe fire restrictions in the areas that you explore

Speaking of Nissan, they are helping push the US into the future (which in my mind means diesel) by taking a huge step in the full-size truck market.  The next Nissan Titan will have a turbo charged V8 Cummins diesel motor capable of a possible 550 lb-ft of torque.  That much power and fuel economy should be a wakeup call to the big three.  Diesel will soon be making an appearance in the smaller truck segment too in the next Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.  The smaller trucks will get treated to a 2.5 or 2.8 liter four cylinder diesel motor.  The 3.0 diesel motor going into the Grand Cherokee will get 21 mpg in the city and up to 30 on the highway.  An unloaded Colorado or Canyon will likely get about the same MPGs which makes it a very exciting option for those of us that want decent fuel economy and torque from our offroaders.  This is very exciting news that hopefully develops into reality by the time I’m in the market for a new ride.  Article from PickupTrucks.com

For our Outdoor Edible segment this time we feature a Jalapeno Shrimp Pasta from Beau at Living Overland.  I haven’t made this one yet but I certainly have added it to my “must make” list!  Based on all the other great recipes from Beau, this one is sure to be great!  Check it out and try if for yourself!

The Offroad APPtitude feature this week is the Offroad Nation game for Android or iOS.  This is a 2D game involving lots of rock crawling using realistic looking vehicles and accessories from real companies.  As you play through the levels you can earn money to upgrade your rig or buy additional rigs.  This game is highly addictive and will help scratch the offroading itch when you can’t get out on the trials with your rig.  Download it for Android or iOS.

And lastly, we were recently informed that Scott from Compact Camping Concepts has recently released a manual on building your own offroad camping trailer.  The ABC’s of Home-Built Camping Trailers guide is for folks with an idea of what they want in a camping trailer and are looking for guidance because they have not done a project like this before.  It is also a good overview for understanding what is involved and assessing if a project like this is right for you.  Buy it now for yourself right here.

The Adirondack Rendezvous is going to be held on 20-22 September!  Check it out and join us if you can!
