In the news we talk about some Ford news.  You may not be familiar with the Ford Everest because it’s never been sold in the US but it is a global version of the Explorer that is actually meant to go offroad.  This version is a concept is a seven passenger SUV looks to be rolling on 33″ all-terrain tires and has a very slick exterior appearance.  It will probably never be available in the US but it is cool to see.  I’m not even convinced that any of the themes or components will ever show up in a North American Ford vehicle.  No details on the mechanicals but its worth guessing, right?!  Check out the full article at autoblog.com.

Back on show ## I told you everything I knew about the 2015 Ford F-150 but there was no new info about the next Ford Raptor. The next generation of the Ford Raptor has been spied though wearing a fair bit of cladding to disguise new bulges and lines that might give us a true indication of whats to come.  AutoBlog said that the next-gen Raptor will be skinned in aluminum, which is really no surprise.  The aluminum skin will cut significant weight which will surely make the current power plant feel more powerful.  With the big brawny Ford V8 engines being replaced by smaller EcoBoost V6s, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a turbo V6 motivating the new Raptor which will surely impact that overall driving experience.  Honestly, I’m kinda surprised that the body panels weren’t completely replaced with fiberglass which is even lighter than aluminum, but also not easily repairable.  Over the coming months, I’m sure we’ll see and hear more about the upcoming Raptor.  Be sure to head over the AutoBlog.com for a full gallery of the spy shots.

In previous shows, we’ve mentioned the likelihood of Jeep announcing the return off the Grand Wagoneer as a model larger than the Grand Cherokee.  On May 6,2014 Mike Manley, Jeep CEO, discussed the five year plan for Jeep.  Jeep is already Fiat Chrysler Automobiles most important brand and Manley wants to push to 1 million sales next year and then push to 1.9 million by 2018.  That extremely ambitious growth will only be possible by expanding more into global markets.  The Cherokee and upcoming Renegade will be built for the Chinese market in China.  Jeep also hopes to grow sales in the Latin America market but developing plants there for the Renegade.  Manley also announced plans to re-engineer the 2018 Wrangler.  The revision plans cover cutting weight, improving powertrain efficiency and aerdynamics.  To us diehard Jeep fans, that sounds a lot like ruining an American icon.  Replacing heavy steel body panels with aluminum has worked well for Ford so I expect to see the same in the Jeep design.  There has been a lot of discussion about moving to an independent front suspension (IFS) which has brought a lot of uneasy feelings from Wrangler fans for a wide range of reasons.  The Cherokee sports an IFS and independent rear suspension (IRS) which as rendered it “un-liftable” and basically killed all hopes of aftermarket support in the offroading segment.  If Jeep neuters the Wrangler with that same IFS/IRS curse, it will surely lose its top slot at SEMA as hottest SUV and get even more scorn than Jeep garnered by molesting the face of the Cherokee, KL.  I fully expect to see riots in the streets of Toledo, Ohio in front of the Jeep plant if these IFS/IRS Wranglers start to creep out of production and into the daylight.  Till then, lets hope the three row Grand Wagoneer is a better hit than that three row Commander and the Wrangler remains an easily modified, rugged offroading beast.  For more, check out the full report at autoweek.com.

Episode 70 – Interview with RockIt Offroad

On this episode of The 4×4 Podcast I get Craig back on the show.  We also feature an interview with Merrel from RockIt Offroad.  Merrel talks about how he got into offroading and all the great stuff happening at RockIt OffroadRockIt Offroad is a custom 4×4 shop in New Braunfels, TX. RockIt Offroad provides installation, fabrication, restoration, service and repairs for Jeeps, trucks and 4x4s.  Merrel also talk about some of the best places to go offroading in Texas so if you’re in the area and looking for some places to wheel, this is a great episode to check out.

RockIt Offroad

In the news we talk about the fact that physics still applies to large vehicles being safer than small vehicles.  PickupTrucks.com reports that insure.com’s list of top 10 vehicles to cause the most property damage in an accident.  The top 10 includes:

  1. Ford F-250
  2. GMC Sierra 2500
  3. Ford F-350
  4. Ram 1500
  5. Infiniti QX80
  6. Dodge Durango
  7. Toyota Tundra
  8. Jeep Grand Cherokee
  9. Cadillac Escalade
  10. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The worst vehicles are:

  1. Toyota Yaris
  2. Fiat 500
  3. Toyota Corolla
  4. Mitsubishi Lancer
  5. Nissan Versa
  6. Kia Forte
  7. Nissan Altima
  8. Ford Focus
  9. Chevy Spark
  10. Toyota Camry

Also in the news we talk about an AutoBlog.com story highlighting a backseat trick that the GMC Canyon can do to make it safer for kids in car seats.  Car seats must have at least 80% on the seat but some mid-size trucks don’t have much seat cushion. GMC’s solution is to remove the headrest and insert it into the holes on the front side of the bottom seat cushion, creating an extension to the seat.  Pretty smart!

The last article that we talked about was the Jeep Renogade.  Jeep has released some more details and I’m pretty sure that I like this one more than the Cherokee.  I do not think that its going to be good of offroading, but may be a great option for someone that wants something reliable year round, fun to drive, economical, and stylish.  I also think that this will be a pretty good option if all you’re going to do is day trip down some rough roads.

Episode 68 – Interview with FTE 4×4

268309_225775247456091_12564_n

On episode 68 of the podcast I bring you an interview with Steve Fagioli who runs FTE 4×4 Specialists in the UK.  Last time we talked with Steve was after he came back from SEMA.  This time Steve gives us some insight into what offroading is like in Europe and why he has chosen to specialize in Jeeps rather than a European based vehicle make such as Land Rover.  FTE 4×4 Specialists Ltd have been building custom Jeeps (Wrangler YJ, TJ, JK & Cherokees XJ, ZJ, WJ, WK) since 1997. Specialising in off-road preparation, suspension, drive train, axles (gearing, lockers, upgrades), body armour, winches, bumpers, lighting & accessories.  Be sure to also follow FTE 4×4 on Facebook.

I also recently dicovered a cool tool that you may be interested in if you run a CB or HAM radio in your vehicle.  The Audio Interupt comes in a wide range of models made to suit the wiring harness needs for a range of vehicles.  When a voice transmission is received on a 2 way-radio, the CB Monitor automatically mutes the stereo and switches the two front speaker to the 2 way radio voice while all other speaker go mute. It remains switched and muted for three seconds after the last voice transmission is received, then returns back to normal stereo play.  It looks like its a fairly quick and easy installation.  The Audio Interrupt makes it easy to enjoy some tunes (or your favorite offroading podcast) and never miss a call on the CB.

The last thing to talk about on today’s show is the Trans-America Trail.  We’ve mentioned the Pan-American Highway on the show many times before but till now, I didn’t know anything about the Trans-America Trail (TAT).  The Pan-American Highway runs from Alaska to Argentina but the Trans-American trails runs from east to west.  The TAT is actually designed for moto travel and not 4×4 vehicle so not all sections of the trail can be traveled by a 4×4, from what I’ve been told.  This trail has me intrigued and I’m really looking to know more.  I’ll probably mention this trail more over the next few episodes but I’d really love to hear what you guys think about this  adventure.  Here’s a few links to learn more about the TAT.

Episode 66 – Interview with Beth from Forbidden Jeeps

Forbidden Jeeps Banner

On this episode we get to bring you another interview that highlights why you might want to participate in a forum.  Beth, from ForbiddenJeeps.com, tells us about how she got into using her Jeep for more than just driving to and from work.  The personal connections that she’s made with people on the Forbidden Jeeps forum has truly changed how she looks at her beloved Jeep and offroading.  I have had a great time jumping into the discussions and I’ve learned quite a bit too.  If you’re looking for a forum to check out, then I recommend that you head over to ForbiddenJeeps.com, sign up, and introduce yourself to the group.

I also learned about the Wyoming Overland Rally coming up on 20-22 June in Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains.  The event will be located in north central Wyoming and will include a day trip into the Big Horn Mountains (an area that I’ve actually never explored before), a group cooking class hosted by our friend Beau at LivingOverland.com, dinner for the group, and ” tall tales told around the campfire.”  The cost of the event will be based on the number of the people who attend (the group campsite costs $129 and will be split by the group).  Since this is an overlanding event, plan to be completely self-sufficient and ready to explore some areas of Wyoming that you probably haven’t explored before.  For more up to date info on the event and even join in on the discussion, head over to the Expedition Portal forum post.

The last article that I discuss in the show is from Tom Severin at 4x4training.com about 5 Reasons To Love Your 4×4 Vehicle.  The 5 reasons that Tom discusses are:  freedom, safety, versatility, year-round birthday gift, and a sound investment. While i don’t think that I totally agree with all of Tom’s points, I’ll discuss them with you anyways.  I’d love to hear what you think about this list.

Picking an Adventure Rig – The Explorer Box with Roof Top Tent

1979661_10152374418957009_133862506_nBack on episode 28, I interviewed Scott Chaney from Compact Camping Concepts (CCC).  You may recall my excitement about the project because of its possibilities to make camping more comfortable and make the packing process much faster.  Since that time I have followed along on the CCC Facebook page and their companion forum, Tventuring.com.  Individuals on the forum have shared details on their own DIY efforts building a lot of tent topped trailers.  The engineering skills and craftsmanship on display in the forum is fantastic.

Our good friend of the show and host of the Adventure IQ podcast, Rob Anderson, has already built an Explorer Box with a roof top ten (RTT).  He was able to pull the lightweight trailer behind his Jeep YJ Wrangler from Boise, ID to Flagstaff, AZ for the Overland Expo last year.  A offroading and camping trip of that size and length with a family of three in a YJ would not be comfortable without the added storage capacity provided by the Explorer Box.

I’ve thought a offroad trailer would be a great idea for a long time and Rob’s experience with his Explorer Box appears to have solved the same problems that  have.  The only difference is the size of the problem – Rob has three people in a YJ and I have five in my XJ.  One important thing in life is one’s ability to apply lessons learned and the accessibility to information and experience when building an Explorer Box.

Advantages:

  • Provides a place to store camping gear at the house
  • Allows me to continue to use my XJ for daily driver, short overland trips and hard-core rock crawling
  • Reduces the amount of vehicle internal storage required
  • Allows the use of a RTT for a more comfortable tent camping experience
  • Permits for a totally custom build to meet my own precise needs
  • Less expensive solution than buying a new vehicle
  • Wonderful project for the family (minus baby CJ) to work on together
  • Can also be pulled by my wife’s suburban
  • Build does not have to be funded all at once
  • Makes driving offroad more of a challenge

Disadvantages:

  • Makes driving offroad more of a challenge
  • When the Army moves my family, we then have a transportation issue (two drivers driving two vehicles vs. two drivers rotating driver duties while pulling a trailer)
  • A single RTT may not give enough sleeping area for 5 people so an extra tent could be required
  • Still have five butts in a vehicle with five seats and two of those seats are bulky car seats/booster seats for a few years

To be perfectly honest, the trailer idea is very appealing to me.  The disadvantage that stands out to me the most is the problem that only shows up during PCS (permanent change of station, aka moving in military terms) season.  My wife and I have become very fond of our ability to drive across the country with the family in the same vehicle.  Adding a trailer like the Explorer Box would need me to either drive two vehicles or upgrade my current 16’ flatbed car hauler to a larger trailer to fit the XJ and trailer.  I’m not even sure that I could fit the Explorer Box and XJ on a 20’ trailer so that option isn’t really practical anyways.

The next article will be about another type of trailer that would solve some of the issues but some of the disadvantages will be the same as the Explorer Box.  What do you think about building a offroad capable Explorer Box camping trailer?  What have I forgotten to consider?

Message from Colton

Hi so im looking into offroading. not extreme rock crawling or anything like that but trails and a bit of mudding. My question is, since im a poor college student and on a limited budget, what are some relatively “cheap” upgrades i could do to my 1995 Toyota pickup 3.0 V6 that could make it more reliable? Heck even some advice for newbie would be appreciated.   Thank you again for the advice I greatly appreciate it and thank you again for recording an awesome podcast it helps the slow hours of work pass by.
Thank you for the time

Message from Kieth

Hi, found your show & listened to #59, had some thoughts on the truck purchase…

I’ve always had a truck. Due to my height, cars & small SUVs are pretty much a no go (not enough head room). The F series has been pretty good to my family. Dad switched from Chevy back in the 80s & never looked back. My current truck is a 13′ F150 FX4 crew, 6.5′ box, EcoBoost. It replaced a 10′ F150 STX supercab, 4×4, 4.6L V8. The main reason was getting a true 4 door vs. the half sized suicide doors. My daughter (6 at the time) got to the point she wanted to let herself in while I was buckling up her younger brother & wasn’t handling the doors very well. there’s also more leg room & bigger seat in the crew. The supercab wasn’t terrible, there was a decent amount of room, but the crews are a lot easier to get in & out of. Plus, with the rear seat flipped up, all kinds of room to put stuff in the cab.

I saw the new GM twins at the auto show over the weekend. The interiors are nice, more so than mine (I got the luxury pkg. The seats are still comfortable tho). But they killed their back seat legroom. Their supercab with the small rear door is hard to get in & out of & don’t have as much room as the previous model. The full crewcab isn’t nearly as big either. Was a huge disappointment. The rep was trying to tell me “go online look at the numbers, we’re better than Ford.” I told him no way, I just sat in your truck & my knees are up against the seats. Their rear step in the bumper is pretty high on the 4×4 models & is cheap plastic. His main selling point was the ride was better than Ford. Probably true, the bowties usually had a better ride than the rest (at the expense of payload & towing capacity). both my F150s, ride wise, not much complaint. not a bad choice at all for a road trip.

Personally, I’m glad Ford didn’t go coil spring. The Ram coil rear pickups aren’t very stable with a load & can’t haul as much. That’s why they brought back the power wagon with leaf spring, for the guys actually buying a truck to use as a truck… if Ford offered coil rear I wouldn’t buy it.
The EcoBoost has great power. the 5.0 is a solid choice too. curious to see the 2.7, but from what was posted (& promptly taken down 😉 it will equal or better the power output of my old 4.6 (290hp, 330tq, 8k towing). I wasn’t unhappy with that engine at all, nice solid runner, would have bought it again if it was an option (the 3.5 EB & 5.0 easily outperform it tho). the mpgs haven’t been very good in the cold & the max tow pkg (big mirrors & 3.73 rearend). I’m getting 14s mixed driving. I was getting 17 hwy before the bitter cold set in. Hope that gets better with the warm weather! (I’ve had this truck less than a year & the folks on the forum see better mpg when they get over 8-9k miles on the truck, guess it takes that long to break the motor in. the bitter cold).
Anyway, that’s enough of my rambling. Keep the Jeep if you can, you’ll regret it the minute you sell it!
The Forbidden Jeeps forum is really so much more.  They frequently have meetups with fellow members.  What makes it a special kind of group is that they do a great job of self-policing.  Many people have had a bad experience because the internet trolls lurk and come out when they think someone has posted something stupid – not at Forbidden Jeeps.  The group encourages learning and different ideas.  If you’re a Jeep fan (any type) I recommend that you check out the page and join in on the conversation.
